Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver had a not-so-subtle message for party officials dissatisfied with Democratic State Committee Chairman John Currie’s leadership at Friday morning breakfast at the party’s annual convention in Atlantic City.
“Chairman Currie, let me say something to you about your leadership of this party. I’ve been around a year or two. I have never, ever, ever seen a Friday morning democratic breakfast with people filled to the rafters. I’ve never seen it,” Oliver said. “And, Phil Murphy, you know, the campaign slogan was ‘we got your back.’ Don’t you ever go to sleep one night and not know that we have your back, chairman.
Some Democrats were dissatisfied that Currie inserted himself into the budget fight between Gov. Phil Murphy and Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin.
None have gone as far as to call for him to resign, and those hatchets haven’t emerged in public since early August, so while Oliver’s statement could me more of a thank you than anything else, it could still serve to dissuade those who might be holding a grudge from reigniting the conflict.
Backing Currie was just a relatively small part of Oliver’s speech, the bulk of which focused on voter turnout and calls to reelect U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez.
“Bob Menendez must be elected back to the U.S. Senate. He must. He is the ranking member on the foreign relations committee. He was at the forefront to protect and support Sen. Warren with these issues of banking and consumer fraud,” Oliver said. “You will get a Donald Trump clone who marches in robotic order with the orange one if you do not get out and vote.”
