Donald Trump, Jr. has endorsed Bob Hugin for U.S. Senate today.
“NJ has a clear choice. Stick with Menendez who will always be dogged by serious ethics questions, or back GOP challenger, Bob Hugin, a Marine Corps veteran and the former chief of a large and very successful business. Seems like a no brainer,” Trump said in a tweet.
Hugin has distanced himself from Trump’s father, President Donald Trump, since joining the race in February. U.S. Senator Bob Menendez has tried to tie his self-financing Republican opponent to a president with upside-down approval ratings in New Jersey.
Hugin was a Trump delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention, gave $100,000 to a super PAC backing Trump, $5,200 directly to the Trump campaigns, and $150,000 to the Republican National Committee in the 2016 cycle. He also contributed directly to twenty state parties across the country. He was on a finance committee to raise money for Trump’s transition team.
Earlier today, the President tweeted his support of Jay Webber, the Republican candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district. It was the second time Trump used social media to plug Webber’s candidacy.
“Jay Webber of New Jersey, running for Congress, is doing a great job against a person who is looking to raise Taxes substantially. Jay wants big Tax Cuts and Changes. A Harvard graduate and father of seven, Jay will be great for New Jersey and get the job done-and I will help!,” the president’s tweet said.
Trump will headline a high-dollar fundraiser for Webber on Thursday evening at the Trump International Hotel in Washington.
