Seven points down in his race for attorney general of Minnesota amidst allegations that he emotionally and physically abused his ex-girlfriend, Rep. Keith Ellison is headed to West Orange tonight to headline an Essex County Democratic fundraiser.

Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) is trying to turn the Ellison appearance in to a campaign issue in his race for the 11th district congressional seat against Democrat Mikie Sherrill.

“After spending so much time attacking Jay Webber for being anti-woman with lies and distortions, Montclair Mikie has no trouble ignoring a credible allegation against a member of her own party,” said Ronica Cleary, a spokeswoman for the Webber campaign.  “It is time she stops deflecting with false attacks and start focusing on real threats that deserve further investigation, no matter the political party of the accused.”

LeRoy Jones, the Essex County Democratic Chairman, bashed Webber for trying to draw Sherrill into a battle over a Minnesota congressman she’s never met.

“The #MeToo movement is probably one of the most moving social justice movements of our era,” Jones told the New Jersey Globe.  “For Jay Webber to denigrate the movement by making it political fodder is disingenuous on his part.  He should hang his head in embarrassment.

Webber’s attacks on the speaker at a Democratic fundraiser comes two days before President Donald Trump headlines a high-dollar event for his own campaign at the Trump International Hotel in Washington.
