Bob Menendez’s campaign on Wednesday said the U.S. senator had returned a 2012 donation of $500 given by former Schools Development Authority chief of staff Albert Alvarez.

Republican State Committee Chairman Doug Steinhardt on Wednesday called for Menendez and State Sen. Nellie Pou to return six-year-old donations from Alvarez, who was once a staffer for Gov. Phil Murphy’s campaign.

Alvarez gave $500 to Menendez last August and $599 to Pou in 2012.

Katie Brennan, chief of staff at the state’s housing agency, accused Alvarez of sexually assaulting her during the campaign.

The allegations led to Alvarez’s resignation and multiple investigations into his hiring in Murphy’s administration.

The governor on Tuesday Monday ordered the creation of an independent investigation into Alvarez’s hiring, and the legislature will vote to create a special committee to investigate the same at the end of the month.

Pou said she wasn’t aware of the donation “but said she would have no problem returning it.

“Absolutely, I have no problem,” she said when asked if she would return the donation. “I have no idea what the donation is. Give me that, and I’ll be happy to take a look at it. I don’t know that Al has ever given me anything, but he could’ve for all I know.”
