Kennedy: Van Drew must pressure Trump on national virus testing program

House candidate Amy Kennedy called on Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) to pressure President Donald Trump into implementing a national COVID-19 testing program Monday.

“Calling for an additional testing site or two is simply not enough,” Kennedy said. “We need Van Drew to use his supposed influence with President Trump to make him keep his promise for testing to anyone who needs it. We cannot safely move forward as a country without dramatically expanding testing, tracing and treatment and giving people the confidence they need to return to work, reopen restaurants and small businesses and restart our economy.”

In early March, Trump touted the country’s testing capacity, claiming that “anyone who wants a test can get a test.”

So far, that hasn’t been the case, and testing is still not widely available for non-symptomatic individuals as some states began to life restrictions imposed to halt the spread of the virus.

Congress last week passed a bill that appropriated $484 billion to expanding virus testing and replenished a Small Business Administration loan program meant to help business keep employees on payroll amid near-total shutdowns of businesses.

Only a relatively small portion of that money, $25 billion, will go explicitly towards expanding the country’s testing capacity.

“With New Jersey suffering some of the highest volume of cases in America, we need Congressman Jeff Van Drew to demand that President Trump keep his promise and implement a national testing program now,” Kennedy said.
