Another of Assemblyman Jay Webber’s rivals for retiring Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen’s House seat has come out against a statement made by State Senator Nellie Pou that mentioned Webber’s children.
“It’s mean spirited,” said Gregg Edwards, campaign manager for Peter DeNeufville. “I don’t think there’s really anything more to add than that.”
On Tuesday, Pou invoked Webber’s daughters to criticize Webber’s stance on women’s issues, including women’s healthcare and equal pay, in an apparent attempt to defend Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill from criticism launched by Webber over her refusal to disavow U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez following an admonition by the Senate Ethics Committee.
The attempt backfired, and the statement has since seen a dizzying amount of condemnation from Republicans in the district, including criticism from rival candidate Tony Ghee.
The Sherrill campaign yesterday declined to comment on the statement, and Pou has yet to say if she stands by the statement.
It’s ironic that Jay Webber can actually verbally abuse young teenage girls in his office and think that’s okay, but when someone mentions that his policies would hurt women and he has daughters, he has a self-righteous break-down. Really?
NJ Globe staff: why are you allowing lies to perpetuate by publishing this candidate’s statement against Mikie Sherrill and Nellie Pou? Anyone who reads the statement would see that neither owes an apology. Mr. Webber should have left his daughters out of his campaign if he did not want anyone to acknowledge their existence. He cannot have his cake and eat it too. His daughters were not attacked, and he is lying outright to try to gain support. Shame on you for allowing his lies to gain more traction.
