Republicans incensed over Pou statement

Invoking family over the line, they say

By Nikita Biryukov, May 02 2018 5:04 pm

A statement by a Mikie Sherrill campaign surrogate that mentioned Assemblyman Jay Webber’s daughters has Republicans in a furor.

The statement by State Sen. Nellie Pou (D-Paterson) attacked Webber’s record on women’s issues and mentioned Webber’s children when railing on that point.

“Why Webber would not support countless pieces of legislation that would have ensured equal pay for equal work as well as equal access to healthcare is yet another sign of the grossly distorted worldview that Webber has deliberately tried to make a reality despite the truly cruel and vicious effect that his voting record and rhetoric has had on not just his four daughters but every woman throughout the state of New Jersey,” Pou said.

The statement has since set of a series of incensed responses from Republicans in the 11th congressional district, including a statement from Webber primary opponent Anthony Ghee.

Ghee has since been joined by a wave of Republican party and elected officials, including Morris County Republican Chair Patti Page, Morris County Freeholder Heather Darling, New Jersey GOP Committeewoman Lynda Pagliughi, Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick and Chatham Deputy Mayor Karen Swartz.

“I can’t believe I have to say this in 2018, but attacking the daughters of Jay Webber, or the family of any candidate, is totally unacceptable.” Darling said. “Yet somehow, Mikie Sherrill’s campaign thinks that bringing Jay’s four young daughters into her political attacks is okay.”

Sherrill campaign manager Mollie Binotto declined to comment on the matter.

Pou could not immediately be reached for comment. An aide in her office said she was in a meeting and would call back with comment when available. This article will be updated with her comment when it comes back.

  1. Why would Mikie Sherill let a liberal hack State Senator speak for her who has one deep-red town that overlaps with her congressional district? I know Josh Gottheimer Miss Sherill and your no Josh Gottheimer. I am increasingly confident Ghee or Webber can win.

  2. Sewarenscoop. You make it sound like Mikie coordinated with Pou on what to say. Have you ever heard of free speech. People are allow to say what they want and do not need to get permission or approval. In the words of our Command and Clown: their was no collusion between Mikie and Pou.

    1. Learn the title and learn to spell it….. The United States Constitution names the President of the United States the “Commander in Chief”! Have some respect for the Office. United we STAND, Divided we FALL!
