Former Democrat has three more Republicans in his corner

State Senator Chris Connors, Assemblyman Brian Rumpf and Assemblywoman DiAnne Gove endorsed Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) Tuesday.

“As State Legislators we worked with then Senator Van Drew on a variety of common sense issues like the Coastal New Jersey Evacuation Task Force to better prepare coastal communities for natural disasters and fighting to ensure South Jersey representation on the New Jersey Turnpike Authority which oversees the Garden State Parkway,” they said in a joint statement. “Our working relationship has continued to grow since his election to Congress, and we call upon our mutual constituents in Atlantic, Burlington and Ocean Counties to join us in supporting his re-election.”

Van Drew defected to the Republican party last month after losing support from rank and file Democrats over his opposition to impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

Though the White House, Republican leaders in the state and Second Congressional district have worked to clear the field for Van Drew, he still faces three GOP primary challengers.

David Richter, Brian Fitzherbert and Robert Patterson are each seeking the Republican nod.

All three initially sought to challenge Van Drew when he was a Democrat, and they’ve remained in the race despite increasingly slim chances of a victory since Van Drew’s defection.
