Building trades union backs Sherrill

Essex County’s Building and Construction Trades Council endorsed Mikie Sherrill on Monday.

“From her commitment in serving America as a decorated Navy helicopter pilot to her commitment as a candidate to stand up for the working families of New Jersey, there is no doubt that Mikie Sherrill is the right choice for these tumultuous times,” said Essex Building Trades Council President Lino Santiago. “We are proud to put our full support behind her candidacy.”

The union represents tens of thousands in the county’s 22 municipalities, more than half of which fall within the 11th district.

Though unions tend to side with Democratic candidates over Republican ones, the Building Trades Council has endorsed a number of Republican members of New Jersey’s Congressional Delegation, including Rep. Tom MacArthur and Rep. Chris Smith.

It looks like Assemblyman Jay Webber won’t be joining those ranks.

“I am proud to receive the endorsement of the Essex County Building Trades,” Sherrill said. “In Congress, I will fight for the working men and women of New Jersey to ensure they have fair wages, good jobs, and that we are investing in New Jersey’s infrastructure to grow our economy now and into the future.”
