Wayne Mayor Christopher Vergano was elected Republican Municipal Chairman on Monday evening, replacing the final remnants of the Scott Rumana wing of the local Republican Party.
With Rumana ally Mike Marrotta not seeking re-election, Vergano ran unopposed for the post.
One year ago, local Republicans withdrew support of Vergano’s re-election and ran councilwoman Lonnie Miller Ryan against him in the Republican primary. Vergano ran off the line and beat Ryan, who was allied with Rumana, by more than 900 votes.
Rumana, a former Wayne mayor, assemblyman and Republican County Chairman, left electoral politics in late 2016 to become a Superior Court Judge.
Tomorrow, Peter Murphy, a bitter Rumana rival, is poised to assume his old post as Passaic County Republican Chairman.
