Monmouth County Democrats have picked Moira Nelson, an Action Together Monmouth County activist, and teacher Michael Penna as their candidates for freeholder.

Nelson was the top vote-getter with 207 votes.  Penna narrowly eked out a win, defeating Asbury Park businessman Jason Modell by a vote of 144 to 122.

A fourth candidate, Liz Lawrence, an aide to Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D-Passaic), dropped out of the race on Friday.

Penna and Nelson will face Republican incumbent Tom Arnone and Wall Township committeeman Nick DiRocco in the general election as Republicans defend their 5-0 majority on the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders.

Gerald Scharfenberger is not seeking re-election in order to run for an open State Assembly seat in the 13th district.

Democrats picked retired Little Silver police lieutenant Kevin Tuohy to challenge Sheriff Shaun Golden.    Golden is also the Monmouth County GOP chairman and a potential candidate for the 2021 Republican gubernatorial nomination.
