Former Alderman: Dodd called Blackman a ‘nigger’

Editor’s note: This article was updated with comment from Mayor James Dodd at 10:26 p.m. This article initially mistakenly identified the woman who was removed from the meeting as Timpani’s girlfriend. She is the girlfriend of Alderman Steven Toth.

A former Dover alderman was removed from a town meeting Tuesday night after he accused Mayor James Dodd of referring to Alderwoman Carolyn Blackman using a racial slur.

“I recall you, when we first started, did not trust Carolyn Blackman,” former Alderman Dominic Timpani said to the mayor. “And, picking on Carolyn Blackman, you want to talk about calling the kettle black? You were the one that turned around and said ‘I do not trust that f-ing nigger.’”

Immediately following the comment, Dodd told Timpani that he was out of order and asked a police officer to remove him from the meeting.

“You used abusive language, you’re done,” Dodd said.

While he did not address Timpani’s allegations on the nine-minute-long video of the incident shared with the Globe, Dodd called Timpani a “deranged” and “very disgruntled” individual.

In a statement to the Globe, Dodd reiterated those descriptors and said Timpani had a vendetta against him because he supported a candidate that unseated him in 2015.

“While I believe that Mr. Timpani’s allegation is so tortious and vitriolic that a response is undignified, I will state that I ABSOLUTELY AND UNEQUIVOCALLY DENY THE ALLEGATIONS — IT NEVER HAPPENED AND IS JUST ANOTHER BLATANT LIE TO FURTHER A DEPLORABLE POLITICAL AGENDA FOR THE SAKE OF DIVISIVE ETHNIC POLITICS,” Dodd said, using capital letters.

The girlfriend of Alderman Steven Toth was also removed from the meeting, though she was not escorted out of the meeting by police.

The incident is part of a larger struggle over representation in Dover, a town with a 69% Hispanic population that is run mostly by a board of old-time white Democrats.

Three of the town’s white aldermen were ousted in June after a group of minority candidates running on the Dover First ticket won elections with the help of the county party and prominent New Jersey Democrats like U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez.

Morris County Democratic Chairman Chip Robinson dropped most of Dodd’s slate from the county line and instead backed those running on the Dover First ticket.

Blackman, the only black woman on the board of Alderman, ran on the Dover First ticket and has held her post since winning it in 2008

  1. I think your use of the N word in your title and spelling it out is gratuitous and insensitive. It’s understandable that you quote exactly what the alderman said, but spelling out such a charged word in your title serves little purpose.

  2. It is what it is. People should be shocked by that word and the historical implications that go with it. These are the people that THEY have elected into office.
