Ewing School Board member Carl Benedetti dropped out of the race for Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora’s Assembly seat on Tuesday to endorse Mercer County Freeholder Anthony Verrelli for the post.
“I’m proud to endorse Anthony Verrelli to be the next Assemblyman representing the 15th Legislative District,” Benedetti said. “I know he will be the progressive champion we need to not just fight for our Democratic values in the Statehouse but to also bring more resources into the district to fully fund our schools and improve our infrastructure. I know he will represent us with integrity and I fully support him.”
The endorsement is the latest in a series of those given by the district’s elected officials, including those of County Executive Brian Hughes and members of the district’s second and third-largest municipal committees.
Verrelli is considered the race’s frontrunner. With Benedetti out of the race, five candidates, including Verrelli, are vying for the seat.
“Securing Carl’s endorsement means a great deal to me and to our campaign,” Verrelli said. “I admire the work that he’s done in Ewing and I know he’s got a very bright future ahead of him. If elected, I look forward to working with him to improve public education in the 15th District and ensure that every town in the 15th has the resources it needs to provide the highest quality of education possible to our students.”
