Egg Harbor Mayor Lisa Jiampetti defeated progressive challenger Mico Lucide to win the Democratic nod for Atlantic County Clerk Tuesday.
Incumbent clerk Ed McGettigan did not seek re-election after facing fire for a ballot screwup that saw incorrect ballots mailed to 554 voters in a race for county commissioner that was decided by just 286 votes.
Jiampetti had the Atlantic County Democratic line and endorsements of prominent Democrats in her bid for the nod. Gov. Phil Murphy backed her campaign, as did Atlantic County Sheriff Eric Scheffler and Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo (D-Northfield) and John Armato (D-Buena).
Lucide, who founded Atlantic County Our Revolution and ran alone off-the-line, wasn’t without his own supporters, winning endorsements from the New Jersey Working Families Alliance and former Freeholder Ashley Bennett, who ran for Congress last year.
Several other candidates launched bids for the clerkship but ultimately remained off the ballot. Calvin Ferrara, who was deputy political director for Amy Kennedy’s 2020 congressional campaign, entered the race but later dropped out and endorsed Jiampetti.
Darlene Samuel and Robert Wesson filed to run for the seat, but their petitions were tossed after a challenge from Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman invalidated enough signatures to get them removed from the ballot.
Jiampetti will go on to face Hammonton Councilman Joe Giralo in the general election. Giralo was unopposed in his bid for the Republican nod.
