Mazzeo endorses Jiampetti for Atlantic County Clerk

Senate candidate said he’d hold off until county convention earlier Monday

Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo (D-Northfield) backed Egg Harbor City Mayor Lisa Jiampetti for Atlantic County clerk hours after he declined to make an endorsement Monday.

“Lisa Jiampetti has the experience as being a mayor to handle the job as county clerk, but I also think it’s important that we have young people like Calvin who really want to step up and run — I think we should keep them in the mix and not discourage them from seeking office,” he said. “But my endorsement does go to Jiampetti because I think, with her experience, she would make a good county clerk for Atlantic County.”

The endorsement brings Mazzeo, who is seeking retiring State Sen. Chris Brown’s (D-Ventnor City) seat in the upper chamber, into line with his running mate, Assemblyman John Armato (D-Buena Vista).

Armato backed Jiampetti earlier Monday. Mazzeo initially declined to make an endorsement, saying he’d prefer to allow the Atlantic County Democratic Committee’s process to play out.

Jiampetti, a three-term mayor who has the backing of the Atlantic County Democratic Candidate Recruitment Committee, faces Calvin Ferrara, who was deputy political director for Amy Kennedy’s 2020 congressional campaign, and Mico Lucide, who ran for Assembly under the Green Party’s banner in 2017.
