Assemblyman John Armato (D-Buena Vista) is backing Egg Harbor City Mayor Lisa Jiampetti for Atlantic County clerk, but his running mate wasn’t so prepared to pick a favorite.
“I think she’s been an excellent choice in Egg Harbor City as mayor, and I think she would do an excellent job,” Armato said when asked if he preferred one of the two Democrats who’ve announced campaigns to replace Clerk Ed McGettigan.
Jiampetti, who has the backing of the Atlantic County Democratic Candidate Recruitment Committee, formally announced her campaign Monday and faces a challenge from Calvin Ferrara, who was deputy political director for Amy Kennedy’s 2020 congressional campaign, and Mico Lucide, a former Green Party Assembly candidate.
McGettigan did not seek re-election, bringing an end to a 28-year political career topped by the mailing of incorrect ballots to 554 voters in a race decided by just 286 votes.
Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo (D-Northfield), who is running for retiring State Sen. Chris Brown’s (R-Ventnor City) seat, wasn’t prepared to back a candidate. He said he’d wait until the Atlantic County Democratic Committee awarded its line.
“Whoever gets it, I’m sure it’s hard work that’ll win it, and that’s what oyu have to do for these types of races. Jiampetti’s been mayor, I think, for a couple terms. She might have more experience on the politics part, but we like to keep the younger people involved too. And that’s the other gentleman who’s going to step up to as well,” he said, referring to Ferrara.
