Sources say that Assemblywoman Betty Lou DeCroce (R-Parsippany) is preparing to run for re-election in 2019 on a ticket with Morris County Freeholder Tom Mastrangelo (R-Montville), whether Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains) wins his congressional race or not.
In 2017, DeCroce faced a primary challenge from a Webber ally, then-Morris County Freeholder Hank Lyon (R-Montville). Freeholder John Cesaro (R-Parsippany) also got in the race, offending both DeCroce and the Webber/Lyon alliance.
DeCroce has endorsed hedge fund manager Antony Ghee for Conrgess against Webber. Lyon is expected to file today as a freeholder candidate against Cesaro in the GOP primary. Because this is not Lyon’s first term, there is no real obstacle to Lyon teaming up with Webber in 2019 – if it comes to that.
If Webber replaces Rodney Frelinghuysen in Congress, there will be a special election convention in January 2019 to fill his Assembly seat. If Morris County is divided between Lyon and Mastrangelo – and likely others – it gives Essex and Passaic Republicans a shot at playing kingmaker in this race.
