Sweeney doesn’t intend to shuffle committee chairs

By Nikita Biryukov, December 04 2019 1:43 pm

Senate President Steve Sweeney said he doesn’t intend to replace any of his committee chairs next year.

“Not in my house,” Sweeney said when asked if he intended to make any major changes to committee chairmanships in 2020.

Coming into this year’s session, Sweeney shuffled some of his committee chairs around.

State Sen. Troy Singleton got Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s spot as chair of the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee.

State Sen. Vin Gopal replaced Singleton as chair of the Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Committee positions, including leadership roles, have at times been used as a sort of political bludgeon.

State Sen. Nia Gill lost her spot as vice chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee after voting against the budget legislative leaders pushed in 2018.
