Cunningham not picking sides in state chair race

Race puts senator between Sweeney, Hudson Democrats

State Sen. Sandra Cunningham isn’t making any endorsements in the contest for Democratic state chairman.

“I have not supported anyone as of yet,” she said.

Incumbent chairman John Currie faces a challenge from Essex County Chairman LeRoy Jones.

While a New Jersey Globe tally of the race has Jones leading Currie 55-43, Hudson County’s Democratic State Committee members are backing the Passaic County Chairman.

Jones has the backing of all seven South Jersey Democratic chairs.

Cunningham is a close ally of Senate President Steve Sweeney.

Meanwhile, Hudson County Chairwoman Amy DeGise has put her lot in with Gov. Phil Murphy, a close Currie ally.
