Dem Progressive Caucus endorses Currie

Incumbent wins 75% against Lefkovic

The New Jersey Democratic State Committee Progressive Caucus voted to endorse Democratic State Chairman John Currie for re-election at a meeting in Red Bank today.

Currie defeated progressive activist Bertin Lefkovic by a 12-2 vote, with two votes in favor of making no endorsement at all.  Essex County Democratic Chairman LeRoy Jones received no votes.

Lefkovic entered the race today.

Just sixteen votes were cast, even though more than 50 people were in attendance.  Only those who had been to a caucus meeting within the last twelve months were eligible to cast a vote.

Gov. Phil Murphy attended the caucus meeting and made a pitch for Currie.

The endorsement has no binding effect on any state committee votes and was ceremonial only.

  1. Why was this ceremonial meeting called two or three days before it was held? why weren’t we told that there would be a ceremonial vote? our progressives attended and were meant to support a new progressive candidate. How is that supposed to happen if progressives in the state don’t have a unified method of connecting with one another in order to coordinate about these types of important meetings? Not sure how progressive can get their act together in New Jersey if Democrats don’t seem to be able to, either.
