Nine months after joining Gov. Phil Murphy’s senior staff, Mary Maples is departing as director of the authorities unit.

Maples is now the general counsel at University Hospital in Newark.  She’s replacing Ryan Goodwin, the son of former State Sen. Tom Goodwin and a former aide to Gov. Chris Christie.

During Christie’s administration, Democrats were critical of political patronage at the hospital, which is state-owned.

For a time, the general counsel was Paul Matey, a former chief deputy general counsel to Christie.  President Donald Trump nominated Matey to serve as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in April, although the U.S. Senate has not yet confirmed him.

Replacing Maples in the authorities unit is Brian Wilton, a former Mayor of Lake Como who resigned in June to join the Murphy administration.   Wilton is expected to take on much of Maples’ portfolio, including a seat on the New Jersey Transit Board.

Maples served as senior counsel in the authorities unit for the last two years of Christie’s administration.

In March, Maples played a key role in an unsuccessful bid by the Murphy administration to seat Elizabeth Calabrese as vice chair of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission.  The post was won by Newark City Councilman Luis Quintana.  It was no completely clear that Maples understood the depth of Quintana’s political clout.
