President Donald Trump on Thursday endorsed Assemblyman Jay Webber on Twitter, praising the house candidate’s stances on immigration, the military and crime.
“@JayWebberNJ is running for Congress in the 11th District of New Jersey. He is outstanding in every way. Strong on Borders, loves our Military and our Vets. Big Crime fighter,” Trump tweeted. “Jay has my Full and Total Endorsement!”
How helpful the endorsement is remains to be seen. It will likely play well among the district’s Republican base, but as one of the state’s most conservative legislators, it’s unlikely Webber would have trouble there in the first place.
On the other hand, Trump’s favorability and approval ratings among independents leave much to be desired. It’s possible the endorsement could backfire should Webber choose to seize on it instead of distancing himself from the president like U.S. Senate Candidate Bob Hugin has.
There is another level you are overlooking…. I would bet money that Trump has told his shop that he doesn’t want to endorse “losers,” so they probably have an internal success threshold that must be met before a tweet like this. In other words, WH likely has access to polling that shows Webber in good shape. And perhaps so does Team Sherrill, hence the flailing attacks on TV.
