An influential Democratic donor is aiming to raise $10 million for a new super Back backing U.S. Sen. Cory Booker’s yet-unannounced presidential run, the New York Times reported Thursday.
Steve Philips, a well-connected donor out of San Francisco whose organizations have previously backed mobilization efforts for Booker and former President Barack Obama, announced he would formally create the pro-Booker super PAC Dream United on Thursday.
According to the Times, Phillips said he has already collected $4 million in commitments and will continue raising money whether Booker wants him to or not.
It’s not yet clear how Booker will respond to independent spending in his favor, as those in the liberal wing of the Democratic party are increasingly hostile to big-money donors and dark money groups, but that won’t be an issue for the senator until he formally announces his candidacy.
