Rep. Chris Smith endorsed the only other Republican member of New Jersey’s congressional delegation Wednesday.
“I have known Jeff Van Drew long before either of us ever dreamed of running for public office, and he has always been a tough, conservative, issue-oriented leader,” Smith said. “Over the last year we’ve worked together on important legislation to assist our veterans and honor America’s commitment to our men and women in uniform, as well as our first responders. I am proud to welcome Congressman Van Drew to the Republican Party and join President Trump in endorsing his re-election to the United States House of Representatives.”
Van Drew defected to the Republican party last month after losing support among the second district’s Democrats over his opposition to impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
Smith’s endorsement of the pro-choice Republican follows ones from Trump and Republican State Chairman Doug Steinhardt, as well as those from some of the district’s Republican leaders.
Trump is set to hold a rally for Van Drew in Wildwood on Jan. 28.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of my longtime friend Congressman Chris Smith, the Dean of New Jersey’s House Delegation,” Van Drew said. “Chris Smith works hard for his constituents and our state. He is an effective lawmaker, and I look forward to continuing to work with him to make America stronger every day.”
