The co-chairman of Donald Trump’s New Jersey campaign says that Rosemary Becchi’s decision to challenge Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) puts the 7th and the 11th congressional districts in play and that he will endorse her if she asks.
“Instead of spending time and resources directed at fellow Republicans we can use those efforts against Democrats who insist on leading our country off a Socialist cliff,” said Senate Minority Whip Joseph Pennacchio (R-Montville). “Tom Kean Jr. already has my support. If Rosemary Becchi thinks I can be helpful and asks for support I will be happy to extend myself for that effort.
Becchi’s switch helps Kean, the minority leader of the New Jersey Senate, avoid an expensive primary and allows him to immediately pivot to a general election campaign to unseat Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes).
Pennacchio lauded Larry Casha, a former Kinnelon councilman who ended is campaign today to clear the field for Becchi.
“Larry Casha entered this race as a class guy,” Pennacchio told the New Jersey Globe. “His stepping aside for the good of the party just reinforces what we already knew.”
The four-term state senator also commended his own party chair for her role in settling the primary fight.
“A special thanks to Laura Ali and her tireless efforts and sharp political instincts in putting this together,” Pennacchio said. “Proud to call her my chairwoman.”
