The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ organization, has endorsed Democrat Mikie Sherrill for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th district.
“Mikie Sherrill is a proven leader who will fight each and every day in Congress for the hard-working families of New Jersey’s 11th District,” said HRC national field director Marty Rouse. “As we face shameful attacks on the fundamental American values of fairness and equality, Mikie Sherrill will stand up to career politicians who put their own ideology ahead of the people of New Jersey. HRC is proud to endorse Mikie Sherrill, and we look forward to working closely with her in Congress to advance LGBTQ equality.”
Sherill faces Republican Jay Webber (R-Morris Plains), a conservative assemblyman, in the race for retiring GOP Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen’s open House seat.
“We need leaders in Congress who are committed to protecting equal rights for all Americans, including our LGBTQ community, and I have done so my entire life.” said Sherrill. “It is an honor to have the endorsement of HRC, an organization that has fought tirelessly to protect equal rights and fight discrimination. I’ve fought for our values in the United States Navy and here in New Jersey as a federal prosecutor. I’m ready to continue to do so in Congress.”
The Sherrill campaign said that Webber has a deep record of opposing LGBTQ issues in the New Jersey State Assembly, noting that he opposed a ban on conversion therapy, same-sex marriage, and civil unions.
