Group calls on Hugin to condemn Byrnes

Make the Road Action, a liberal interest group made up by people of color, on Tuesday sought to condemn Bob Hugin for what it said was a failure to condemn remarks by a Berkley Council President James Byrnes that the group says are racist.

“Despite spending millions of dollars in television commercials in an attempt to portray himself as a ‘different’ kind of Republican, time and time again Bob Hugin remains silent in the face of racism,” Sara Cullinane, the group’s director said. “What’s more, it is clear that if he were elected to the U.S. Senate, Hugin would simply adhere to Trump’s xenophobic policies. That is not what New Jersey – one of the most diverse states in the country – needs.

Byrnes was quoted as saying “What about Sweeney? He wants to give licenses to all the Mexicans,” at a joint rally for Hugin and Rep. Tom MacArthur.
