Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a potential candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, will be in New Jersey on Saturday to campaign for Josh Welle.
Welle is challenging 19-term Republican Rep. Christopher Smith (R-Hamilton) in New Jersey’s 4th district. He has raised $1.3 million in his bid to take on Smith, who was elected to Conrgess in 1980; only two congressmen have served in the House longer.
Patrick served as Assistant U.S. Attorney General for Civil Rights under President Bill Clinton and was governor from 2006 to 2015. He is now at Bain Capital.
The former governor will join Welle at events in Spring Lake, Neptune and Hamilton.
New Jersey’s Cory Booker is also a possible 2020 candidate.
