Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce said on Thursday that she would back Assemblyman Jay Webber – or any other Republican candidate – in the race for retiring Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen’s seat if Antony Ghee does not win the nomination.
“Of course. I’ll stand behind any Republican that does,” She said, referring to a primary win. “I hope [Webber] does the same if Tony Ghee wins.”
Webber said on Thursday that, while he does not expect to lose the nomination, he would back the Republican nominee, whoever they were, if he did.
DeCroce endorsed Ghee, a hedge fund manager and U.S. Army Reserve JAG major, a day after he announced his run in February.
Still, despite the apparent ease with which the assembly members will coalesce around a candidate in the eleventh congressional district, it’s possible that a loss on Webber’s part could cause some friction in the 26th legislative district.
DeCroce wouldn’t say in clear terms whether she would run together with Webber in 2019 if he lost in 2018.
“That will be up to him. That will be a discussion later,” DeCroce said. “He didn’t run with me last year, so we’ll see what happens next year.”
