District 38 GOP chair won’t seek re-election

Jim Arakelian, the Bergen County District 38 Republican Chairman, announced today that he will not seek re-election to a second term in June.

“For my part, although I’ve enjoyed my time as chair, I believe its best to pass along the gavel to someone else within our district so, I will not be running for re-election this year,” Arakelian said.  “I plan on dedicating myself to helping Mayor Schmelz win County Executive in November as well as helping our district candidates.”

District 38 will have special elections for the Legislature in November.  The Democratic incumbents —appointed State Sen Joseph Lagana and appointee assemblymembers Lisa Swain and Chris Tully — will be on the ballot.  The Republicans have not yet selected their candidates.

“Although we were not successful in last years campaign, I think we can all agree, the climate in Bergen County has changed and even with the better candidates, its really hard running against a long time incumbent,” Arakelian said. “We have a new opportunity this year and hopefully, The BCRO will field a ticket able to beat the Democrats in the special election.“
