Murphy won’t endorse Stack for county chair

Says he doesn’t get involved in county chair contests

Gov. Phil Murphy would not endorse State Sen. and Union City Mayor Brian Stack for Hudson County Democratic Chairman.

“We don’t get involved in that,” Murphy said at a press conference following an unrelated event in Hoboken. “Big fan of Brian’s. He’s a great mayor, a great senator. Nobody flies closer to the ground in terms of knowing his constituency, either one, but we don’t get into all that.”

Stack’s run at the chairmanship is at the center of an intra-party feud between Hudson County Democrats.

On one side are Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, State Sen. and North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco, and Amy DeGise, the Jersey City Board of Education member challenging Stack to be county chair.

Amy DeGise is the daughter of the county executive.

Aligned with Stack are a group of Hudson County mayors, including Hoboken’s Ravi Bhalla, West New York’s Felix Roque and Jersey City’s Steven Fulop.

Murphy has so far stayed out of the race that has split Hudson County Democrats down loyalty lines, though he did appear with Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis, who is backing Tom DeGise in the feud, before Davis was reelected to a second term earlier this month.
