Monmouth Dem Chairman to back Jones

Announcement of support is imminent, sources say

Monmouth County Democratic Chairman David Brown is preparing to endorse LeRoy Jones for Democratic State Chairman, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Calls are being made now to local Democratic officials advising them of Brown’s intent to back Jones, the Essex County Democratic Chairman, over incumbent John Currie.

Currie has the backing of Gov. Phil Murphy, who lives in Monmouth County.

Monmouth has eight State Committee votes.  It is not immediately clear how many of them Brown can deliver.

Still, even half brings Jones closer to locking in a majority against Currie, the chairman since 2013.

Last week, Politico New Jersey reported that Murphy texted Democratic State Committeeman Robert Salman of Marlboro asking him to back Currie.  Salman said he has had discussions with Murphy administration officials regarding a new chief ethics officer position at New Jersey Transit.
