BAYONNE – Following a story in the Jersey Journal in which Davis Team Council member Gary La Pelusa admitted that 40 tax breaks given out to rich developers could cause the city to “lose a lot of tax money from one year to the next”, the O’Donnell Team for Bayonne released a statement hammering the Mayor and his Council for selling out Bayonne taxpayers.
The O’Donnell Team consists of Jason O’Donnell for Mayor, Dan Ward for Council At Large, Melissa Enriquez-Rada for Council At Large, Sharma Montgomery for First Ward Council, Kevin Kuhl for Second Ward Council and Matt Klimansky for Third Ward Council.
“Over the last four years Jimmy Davis’ Team has repeatedly stated that tax breaks for rich out of town developers hurt Bayonne taxpayers. Yet, they gave out forty of them.
Juan Perez, Gary La Pelusa and even the special interests who helped get Jimmy Davis elected and then received the financial benefits of these handouts all agree, Bayonne taxpayers deserve better. The Davis Team’s abatement deals sold out taxpayers, shortchanged education funding in our city for years to come and did nothing to ensure good paying city jobs for Bayonne residents.
Instead of campaigning for another four-year term, Jimmy Davis, Sharon Nadrowski, Sal Gullace, Gary La Pelusa, Juan Perez and Thomas Cotter should be knocking on doors to apologize to their friends and neighbors for hurting every taxpayer in Bayonne.”
In the Jersey Journal story, which can be found below, Councilman La Pelusa said: “A lot of the PILOTs’ (estimated annual revenue) are based on full occupancy, and they basically make the city a partner with a development because we’re getting a percentage of their gross rental income. If there’s an economic downturn or maybe you have a management of those developments that aren’t aggressive — in effect we could lose a lot of tax money from one year to the next.”

The O’Donnell campaign previously highlighted:
– a direct mail piece from when Jimmy Davis was a candidate for mayor paid for by out of town special interests that claimed he would “end unnecessary 30 year tax abatements that the homeowners have paid for.”
– a video in which now Councilman Juan Perez described these same 30-year abatements as his biggest concern when he was a candidate on the Davis Team ticket four years ago, stating “People should pay their fair share. These people getting these 30 years abatements, they should be paying what the senior citizens are paying here in Bayonne, the same thing. Because it’s not fair that the seniors are burdened with the taxes and the people here that live in Bayonne are burdened with the taxes while these guys are getting these abatements and getting off scot-free. It’s just not fair.”
