Two former officials from Cory Booker’s 2020 presidential campaign, Clay Middleton and Brady Quirk-Garvan, have assumed top posts in President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign in advance of the South Carolina Democratic primary.
Middleton, an Army combat veteran, and Bronze Star recipient, and worked for Rep. James Clyburn and the Obama administration before joining the Booker campaign. Later, he worked for Democratic National Chairman Jaime Harrison, a former South Carolina Democratic Party chairman. He is currently a managing director in the Washington office of Mercury, a global public affairs firm where Booker’s top New Jersey political advisor, Mo Butler, is a partner.
He ran for mayor of Charleston in last month’s election, but finished third and did not make the runoff.
Quirk-Garvan, a former Charleston County Democratic chairman, is a 20-year veteran of Democratic political campaigns.
“South Carolina stood up and showed out for Biden in the last presidential primary, and he will most certainly need that same level of enthusiasm this time around,” said Butler. “He couldn’t have hired a more seasoned team to make it happen.”
Booker continues to visit South Carolina in support of Democratic candidates, which could be pivotal to his prospects of winning the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
Biden has ramped up his ground operation there in advance of facing Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minnesota) and author Marianne Williamson in the February 3 primary election.
