The last time a United States Senator from New Jersey was the ranking minority member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a President from the other party nominated a U.S. Secretary of State: 1976, and the new Secretary of State was Cyrus Vance from Far Hills, New Jersey.
Vance had no trouble getting the support of his home state senators: Republican Clifford Case, the ranking foreign relations panel member, had been Vance’s law partner; and Vance had served as co-chairman of Harrison Williams 1976 re-election campaign. Vance sailed through committee and easily won Senate confirmation.
