6 Things to Know About New Jersey’s Sales Tax History

Gov. Phil Murphy is expected to propose an increase of the sales tax from 6.625% to 7%.   Here are six things to know about New Jersey’s sales tax numbers:

1. The first sales tax was proposed under Gov. Robert Meyner.
2. Gov. Tom Kean raised the sales tax from 5% to 6% in 1982.
3. Gov. Jim Florio raised it from 6% to 7% in 1990.
4. The Republican-controlled legislature rolled back the sales tax from 7% to 6% in 1992.
5. Gov. Jon Corzine raised it from 6% to 7% in 2006.
6. Chris Christie rolled the sales tax back to 6.875% in 2016, and to 6.625% effective January 1, 2018.
