West Orange astronaut brings in $4.1 million in bid for Arizona U.S. Senate seat

Astronaut Mark Kelly, the West Orange native who is seeking a United States Senate seat in Arizona, raised $80,899 from New Jersey donors during the first quarter of 2019.

Kelly has raised more than $4.1 million since announcing in February that he would challenge interim Republican Senator Martha McSally.

Among Kelly’s top donors: former Goldman Sachs executive Kevin Quinn, who was named on Friday as Gov. Phil Murphy’s pick to head the Economic Development Authority, has contributed $5,600; Finn Wentworth, once a major GOP donor who shunned Rodney Frelinghuysen last year and backed Mikie Sherrill for Congress, donated $5,400; and Lowenstein Sandler partner Edward Zimmerman sent in $5,600.

The husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Arizona), Kelly has been actively involved in gun control advocacy since his wife was shot during an assassination attempt in 2011, and he was frequently seen on the campaign trail — including in New Jersey.

He stumped for Murphy in 2017 and Sherrill last year but also backed Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton Township) for re-election last year against Democrat Tom Malinowski.

McSally was appointed to fill the seat of the late John McCain five weeks after losing the state’s other Senate seat to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema by a 50%-48% margin.
