Former Vice President Joe Biden will carry the state in his bid to unseat President Donald Trump, the New Jersey Globe projects.
The Democrat’s victory was never in question. New Jersey last backed a Republican for the presidency in 1988, and Democrats’ registration advantage here has since ballooned.
More than that, popularity that Trump enjoyed in some of the state’s suburban congressional districts in 2016 and 2018 has all but evaporated. Polls consistently showed Biden led the incumbent by between 20 and 30 points in the Garden State.
Neither candidate really made a play for New Jersey, acknowledging that a Democratic victory here was all but assured, though the Democratic State Committee, Gov. Phil Murphy and others have participated in some campaign events boosting Biden.
Trump held a rally in Wildwood in January to boost Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis), but he’s done little since.
