West New York mayor Felix Roque will raise private funds to pay for the installation of video security cameras and wrote a personal check for $10,000 to launch Safety First for West New York, a non-profit he’s formed to seek contributions from business owners and local residents.
Roque has been a proponent of surveillance cameras in all town parks and in high-crime areas, but his proposal did not receive the support of the three commissioners running in a different slate in the May non-partisan elections.
“It is unfortunate that these commissioners did not support this important plan that was in the best interest of our town. It is sad when elected officials put politics before the safety of our residents,” Rogue said. “Due to the irresponsible action of (Gabriel) Rodriguez, (Cosmo) Cirillo and (Margarita) Guzman, I decided to help raise private funds to help install these cameras. I will work closely with Safety First for West New York to help raise the necessary resources to protect our community.”
