West New York Mayor Felix Roque on Sunday accused his county-backed challenger, Commissioner Gabriel Rodriguez, of harassing residents using the town’s police department.
Roque claimed Rodriguez, who runs the city’s police department, was using West New York officers to harass Roque supporters.
“Today Dante Joa was arrested by police while exercising his constitutional right of free speech. This is just another example how Commissioner Rodriguez is using the police and other municipal workers to intimidate and harass our supporters,” Roque said. “As a Cuban American these tactics are particularly disturbing to me and are the same tactics that were used by Fidel Castro and Nicholas Maduro.”
Roque said he would ask state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal to investigate the incident.
“This is the second time that the police were used to repress our citizens exercising their first amendment right of free speech,” Roque said. “Earlier the police were sent to stop my supporters from giving out information to school employees. At that time, my supporters were threatened with arrest.”
