Union County Republicans will run Peter Kane and Glenn Gelband for freeholder against Democratic incumbents Bette Jane Kowalski, Sergio Granados and Rebecca Williams.

“We’re going with a two-candidate strategy,” said Glenn Mortimer, the GOP county chairman.

Kane is the president of Marist High School in Bayonne and served as a senior director of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency.   He is a commissioner of the Summit Housing Authority and ran for freeholder in 2018.

Gelband, a family law attorney from Mountainside, is also making his second bid for freeholder.  He ran in 2016.

Mortimer says that Peter Lijoi will challenge longtime Surrogate James LaCorte.  Lijoi serves on the Union County Board of Taxation and was the executive director of the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority.  He has run for surrogate and sheriff in the past.
