Republicans haven’t won a countywide race in Gloucester since 2000, but President Donald Trump carried the district in 2016.
Republicans believed he could do so again, lending the GOP some much-needed coattails in a county where Democrats hold a 34,602-voter registration advantage.
Still, Democrats in Gloucester have fared well regardless of what happened at the top of the ticket.
In 2016, Freeholders Frank DiMarco and Dan Christy defeated Republican challengers Jack Scheidell and Carolyn King-Sammons with safe margins.
