A former Bridgewater police chief and a lifelong Republican will be the Democratic candidate for Monmouth County Sheriff.
Manuel Caravela is switching parties and will challenge incumbent Shaun Golden in November. He’s already criticizing Golden’s dual role as the county’s top elected law enforcement official and as the Monmouth County Republican chairman.
It will be an uphill battle for Caravela. Democrats haven’t won a countywide election in Monmouth since Democrat Amy Mallett defeated Republican John Curley in a 2008 freeholder race.
Caravela, a Manasquan resident, spent almost 30 years as a police officer in Bridgewater and served as chief for three years before his retirement in 2016.
If he wins, he’ll become the state’s second Portuguese-American sheriff. Armando Fountoura has been the Essex County Sheriff since 1991.
