Monmouth Dems back Dothard for sheriff

Monmouth County Democrats have picked former State Senate candidate Raymond Dothard to challenge Sheriff Shaun Golden, according to a report by More Monmouth Musings.

Dothard, 77, is making his bid in a still-mostly Republican county. Though he’ll face an uphill battle, Golden, who is also Monmouth County Republican chair, is considered a potential candidate for governor come 2021.

A tough — or vicious — campaign challenge in 2019 could sully the Republican’s image and dampen his chances of challenging Gov. Phil Murphy.

Dothard challenged State Sen. Sam Thompson in 2013. Thompson easily kept his seat, winning the race by 31 points.
