Essex County Chairman LeRoy Jones hasn’t decided if he’ll seek State Democratic Chairman John Currie’s post, but the interest is still there.
“My interest is squarely there,” Jones told the New Jersey Globe Wednesday. “I’m a party person. I want to see the party grow, and I think that, certainly along with other good Democrats in this state, I’d like to be a part of that growth.”
Democratic party leaders quickly drew lines after Jones told the New Jersey Globe he was interested in the position last year, with roughly equal portions of New Jersey’s Democratic state committee people backing either chairman.
The prospective battle over control of the state party is something of a proxy fight between Gov. Phil Murphy and legislative leaders, with whom the governor has repeatedly feuded over his first 20 months in office.
