Former Cape May County Republican Freeholder Robert Matthews backed Democratic County Chairman Brendan Sciarra for a seat on the freeholder board Wednesday.
“This is not about Republicans or Democrats, it’s all about who is the best person for the job,” Matthews said. “It’s all about a person who can work with everyone, Republican and Democrat, to get things accomplished. Brendan Sciarra is that person.”
Sciarra and running mate Liz Casey are challenging incumbent Republican Freeholders Will Morey and Jeff Pierson.
Casey was once a senior counsel to the New Jersey Casino and Control Commission. She unsuccessfully sought a seat on the freeholder board in 2019.
“It might not be scientific, but in the end, he gets the job done,” Matthews said of Sciarra. “This is why I am endorsing his candidacy and believe he is the best person to represent Cape May County on the Board of Chosen Freeholders to make Cape May County a better place to live and raise your family and give Cape May County it’s long overdue fair share.”
Democrats last won a Cape May County freeholder seat when Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis), now a Republican, ousted incumbent Republican Freeholder Mark Videtto in 2000.
