Scheffler likely wins in Atlantic, but other races too close to call

Democratic Sheriff Eric Scheffler will likely defeat former sheriff’s officer Joe “Tokyo” O’Donoghue, but other countywide races there are too close to call.

Scheffler leads O’Donoghue by a little more than 11,000 votes.

Democratic At-Large Freeholder Caren Fitzpatrick and Celeste Fernandez lead Republican Freeholder John Risley and Somers Point Councilman James Toto, but the margins are thin. Fernandez leads Risley by only about 200 votes.

Candidates for the District 3 freeholder seat are neck and neck. Democrat Thelma Witherspoon leads by less than 200 votes. District 3 Freeholder Ashley Bennett did not seek re-election after dropping her congressional bid.

Republican Surrogate James Curcio leads challenger Stephen Dicht by about 3,400 votes, but that race is also too close to call.

Democrats here pinned their hopes on former Vice President Joe Biden and House candidate Amy Kennedy, hoping their bids against President Donald Trump and Rep Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) would fare well enough to boost down-ballot Democrats.

Even if Democrats win all three of the freeholder seats up this year, Republicans will still have a 5-4 majority on the freeholder board, but that would set up a control election next year.

There are 18,374 more Democrats than Republicans in Atlantic County.
