The Asbury Park Press has endorsed Republicans to continue control of the Ocean County Board of Freeholders, backing five-term incumbent Gerry Little should get re-elected and Republican Gary Quinn for a rare open seat.
“Over the years, many of our Ocean County freeholder endorsements have spoken about the importance of having at least one representative from each of the two major parties sitting on the board to serve as a check on the other party,” the editorial board wrote. “This year won’t be one of those years. Not only will we not be endorsing a Democrat this year, even the dysfunctional county Democratic Party isn’t backing one of the two Democratic candidates who will be appearing on the ballot — Teddy Price of Toms River.”
Price lost party support – whatever that means for a Democrat in Ocean County — in his bid for freeholder after endorsing Republican Bob Hugin for U.S. Senate.
Democrats didn’t even bother showing up to a meeting with the editorial board. The newspaper says they reached out to Price several times, without success, and that Democrat Vince Minichino could not find time to meet with them.
Ocean County hasn’t elected a Democratic freeholder since Paul Brush won in 1989.
