The Asbury Park Press has endorsed one Republican and one Democrat for Monmouth County freeholder.
The newspaper is backing Democrat Larry Luttrell for a one-year unexpired term against incumbent Gerry Scharfenberger but is supporting Republican Sue Kiley for a full-term.
Kiley, the deputy mayor of Hazlet, faces Democrat Amber Gesslein, and incumbent John Curley, who is running as an independent. Republicans dumped Curley from their ticket after charges of sexual harassment were leveled against him.
“Curley certainly has been a maverick, providing an important check on the freeholder board, which has been all-Republican for the past seven years. His accomplishments during his three terms can’t be overstated,” the newspaper said. “But we believe there’s truth behind the allegations that he has made crude, sexist, disrespectful comments to women. There is no room for that in politics or anywhere else. That should be an automatic disqualifier.”
All five seats on the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders are occupied by Republicans.
