Democratic candidates for Ocean County Freeholder have won the endorsement of the Asbury Park Press.
The endorsement went to David Wright and Jean Czarkowski in their bid to unseat incumbents Virginia Haines and Jack Kelly.
“The advantage of experience, particularly when it’s coupled with one-party rule, as it is on the freeholder board and throughout bright-red Ocean County, can be offset by arrogance, single-minded policymaking and an unwillingness to listen and act on new ideas,” the newspaper editorial board said.
Democrats have not won a countywide election in Ocean County since 1989.
Since Ocean began electing freeholders in 1850, women have won twice: Hazel Gluck in 1976 – she gave up her seat to run for Assembly three years later – and Haines in 2016.
